Parents are the Great Un-tapped Recruitment Tool
According to a survey taken by 130 AFA members, less than half of the respondents (48%) include parents in their recruitment strategies. This may be detrimental to an organization whose primary target audience  is Gen-Y students.
According to culture researcher and professor of education, Dr. Robert DeVargas, "Contrary to  many  people's thinking, parents are still the most influential force in the life of high school and college-aged students. This is even more true for Generation-Y, those born between 1979 and 1996, then for Gen-X and earlier. Without question, to reach high school graduates, you must include reaching  their parents as well."

Survey Results Are Telling
The results of the recent "Greek Life Recruitment Survey" are now being tabulated. It was conducted by Eternal Interactive both online and at the 2003 annual AFA meeting in San Antonio. One-hundred and thirty respondents from colleges and universities nationwide explained how they  go about  recruiting. They explained what works  for them and what doesn't. They described their timelines, budgets, and methodologies. And they described what they  wish they could change  to be more effective.

Preliminary findings are very telling. For example, while almost all of the campuses recruit incoming freshmen (90.4%), less than two-thirds (60.8%) try to reach transfer students and only half (50.4%) see current students as potential members. And, as noted earlier in this issue, less than half of the schools try to reach the most influential people in the lives of incoming freshmen--their parents (see above). These recruitment patterns may have huge impacts on the success of a school's recruitment efforts.

Look for more results of this important survey in upcoming issues of the Recruitment Update .
